What Is Normal in My Country but Weird in the Rest of the World

I N D O N E S I A

Right above (North) Australia if you wonder where is it.

Few introduction to this all-year-summer country, there are about 600 billion people and about third of it concentrated in only 2 main provinces (islands) and I am one of the third percent of them who lives in Java Island.

Okay, so no more yada yada.

1. We eat raw chili, with almost everything.
You read it right, we very love super spicy foods we can eat raw chilis combined with fritter/ spring roll/ rice roll, everything!

2. We eat kerupuk (rice crackers) at almost any chances.
Most people love rice crackers combined with almost all foods, proved by its availability which is almost everywhere in many different variations and flavors.

3. We love to eat Durian.
Most people of the rest of the world say it very stinky (fact) but most people here love it (the taste) and brag when they can afford to have a Durian party.

4. We pat our right hand on our chest after a handshake.
I am not very sure about the reason why we do this but this is the most polite way to handshake.

5. We asks questions about marital status, religion, and plans to do, to complete strangers.
Although the questions are only a chit chat and they don't expect a clear answers, these must be answered in respectful manners and hopefully true. No one were easily butthurt when they were asked these questions but the era has changed.

6. We don't shower, we take a bath with a water dipper.
Not all but mostly people here use water dipper when taking a bath. Our typical bathroom is having a small-pool-like water container. We rarely have a shower.

7. We eat full meal for breakfast.
Typical menu for Indonesian breakfast is Nasi goreng (fried rice) which usually contains eggs, veggies, and other extras like sausages, crackers, and shreded chicken.

8. We build food stands on the sidewalks.
Like literally ON the sidewalk and block it entirely so if you walk it is a 100% chance you meet the food stands blocking your way. Sad but true.
